Azeri author shares love for Jordan
By
Rand Dalgamouni
AMMAN -
It was love at first sight when Azeri Elvira
Arasli first arrived in Jordan in 1980.
Arasli, whose husband was an employee at the
Soviet embassy in Amman, proceeded to spend four
years travelling across the Kingdom, which
deepened her affinity for the people and customs
of Jordan.
It was then that Arasli first thought about
writing a book to share her passion for Jordan
with the world.
"I was too young and inexperienced then, so I
decided to postpone the book for later," she
said.
Returning to Jordan in 2006 as the wife of the
first Azeri ambassador to the Kingdom, Arasli's
thoughts again returned to the book.
She finally started working on it, collecting
information on Jordan from its people; bedouins,
Circassians and Chechens. She travelled around
the country, experiencing the Kingdom’s
monuments, heritage and culture firsthand.
The culmination of years of work, "Jordan Is My
Love," was launched on Tuesday at the Azeri
embassy in Amman.
In the 273-page book, the author recounts her
travels in Jordan and the places she visited.
At the launch, Arasli said her book, written in
Russian, is meant to acquaint readers in
Azerbaijan and other Russian-speaking countries
with the Kingdom’s rich history and cultures.
"I hope my book will contribute to the strong
relations between Jordan and Azerbaijan and
acquaint others with the kindness and nobility
of the Jordanian people," she said.
Arasli, a geological engineer by education, is a
member of the writers union in Azerbaijan and
Russia and has published several books and
articles in newspapers and magazines. Her works
have been translated into Arabic, English,
German, French, Italian, Spanish and Czech.
Arasli said she is planning on spreading the
love by translating her book into other
languages “soon”.
